Overview
The 2004 NFL Draft was held April 24-25 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

A total of 255 players were selected. That included 35 underclassmen out of 44 who declared for the draft (79.5 percent of those available). There were 14 players drafted from Ohio State, five more than from any other school (Miami and Purdue had nine each). There were 48 defensive backs selected, 12 more than any other position.

Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning was the No. 1 overall pick by the Chargers, but was subsequently traded to the Giants for a package that included the No. 4 overall pick, QB Philip Rivers from North Carolina State. Eli's brother Peyton Manning was also a No. 1 selection, drafted by the Colts in 1998. This was the fourth straight year that a quarterback was selected No. 1 overall.

Miami (Ohio) quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, selected 11th overall by the Steelers, was the Offensive Rookie of the Year, after going 13-0 as a starter in the regular season. The next player picked, Miami linebacker Jonathan Vilma, drafted No. 12 overall by the Jets, was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

"Mr. Irrelevant," Andre Sommersell, a linebacker from Colorado State, was the 255th overall selection by the Raiders.
