The 2002 NFL Draft was held April 20-21, 2002 at Madison Square Garden. There were a total of 261 players selected over the two days of the draft -- 98 on the first day (which consisted of the first three rounds) and 163 on the second day.

There were 52 defensive backs selected, the most frequently-selected position, six in the first round. Fresno State quarterback David Carr was selected first overall by the Houston Texans. Carr was the first ever draft pick of the Houston Texans.

One drafted player -- Giants TE Jeremy Shockey (No. 14 overall) -- was named First-Team All-Pro as a rookie. Second round pick Clinton Portis (RB, Broncos) was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while No. 2 overall pick Julius Peppers (DE, Panthers) earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
