There were 45 defensive backs selected, the most frequently-selected position, six in the first round. Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick was selected first overall by the Atlanta Falcons. It was the third time in the common draft era (dating to 1967) that the Falcons made the No. 1 overall selection and the second time Atlanta chose a quarterback.
None of the players drafted were All-Pro selections as rookies. Second round pick Anthony Thomas (RB, Bears) was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while fellow second round pick Kendrell Bell (LB, Steelers) earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
