In the 2008 season, the 49ers finished 7-9 in the regular season, finishing in second place in the NFC West. This is their first draft under new head coach Mike Singletary, who replaced Mike Nolan on an interim basis during the 2008 season, then was awarded the full-time head coaching position.
Priot to 2009, the 49ers had used three of their past four first-round selections on defensive players, including 2008, when they selected North Carolina defensive end Kentwan Balmer with the 29th overall selection.
