After winning Super Bowl XLIII, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Missouri DT Evander "Ziggy" Hood with the 32nd overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the final pick of the first round.

In the 2008 season, the Steelers finished 12-4 in the regular season, finishing in first place in the AFC North.

The Steelers have used four of their last six first-round selections on offensive players, including 2008, when they selected Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall 23rd overall.
- The Steelers acquired the 15th pick in the 3rd round (79th overall) and the 20th pick in the 3rd round (84th overall) from the Denver Broncos in exchange for the 32nd pick in the 2nd round (64th overall) and the 32nd pick in the 4th round (132nd overall) on April 25, 2009.

- The Steelers acquired the 17th pick in the 7th round (226th overall) from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for Sean Mahan on Sept. 2, 2008.
