Matthew Shaughnessy is a defensive end for the Oakland Raiders, who selected him with the 71st pick in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Shaughnessy played four seasons of college football at Wisconsin, where he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection. Shaughnessy is 6-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 253 pounds.
Shaughnessy was a two-time all-state selection at Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, CT. He signed with Wisconsin after also considering offers from Boston College, Michigan State and Purdue.
Shaughnessy started seven games as a true freshman, playing in 11 games for the Badgers. He finished the 2005 season with 39 total tackles (7.5 for loss) and 2.5 sacks, earning first team Freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News. However, his season was cut short by a knee injury suffered against Iowa, forcing him to miss Wisconsin's season finale and bowl game.
Shaughnessy returned healthy for 2006, and finished the season with 35 total tackles. His 8.0 tackles for loss ranked second on the team, and he tied for second among Badgers with 4.0 sacks. However, he re-injured his ACL at the end of the season.
In 2007, Shaughnessy stayed healthy for the entire season, earning second team All-Big Ten honors. He led Wisconsin with 18.0 tackles for loss, ranking fourth in the Big Ten. His 60 total tackles were the most among Wisconsin defensive linemen in 2007.
In spring practice in 2008, Shaughnessy suffered a broken right fibula and had to have a pin inserted. He returned to the field in time for the 2008 season, but his effectiveness was limited. He finished his senior season with 40 total tackles (8.0 for loss) and 4.0 sacks, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. After the 2008 season, Shaughnessy was invited to participate in the 2009 East-West Shrine Game. He had a standout performance, finishing with four total tackles (1.0 for loss) and two pass breakups for the winning East squad.
Shaughnessy was selected in the third round (71st overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Before the 2009 season, Shaughnessy signed a four-year/$2.6M contract with Oakland.
