Steven Darcel McBath is a safety for the Denver Broncos, who selected him with the 48th overall pick in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. McBath played college football at Texas Tech, where he was a three-time All-Big 12 selection. McBath is 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 196 pounds.
McBath helped lead Gainesville High School in Gainesville, TX to a 16-0 record and a state title in 2003. He recorded 76 total tackles and six interceptions on defense, while catching 14 touchdown passes on offense. Rivals.com ranked McBath as the No. 35 cornerback in class of 2004. He chose Texas Tech over Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
McBath redshirted the 2004 season, then suffered an injury in preseason practice in 2005 that cost him half the season. He returned to play six games in 2005, recording one tackle.
McBath made big strides in his sophomore season, finishing third on the team with 75 total tackles. He also led Texas Tech with three interceptions while starting all 13 games, and earned second team All-Big 12 honors. McBath capped off his sophomore season by recording five tackles in Texas Tech's record comeback against Minnesota in the Insight Bowl.
As a junior, McBath again finished third on the Red Raiders with 73 tackles, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. He had two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown against Iowa State.
In 2008, McBath recorded a career-high seven interceptions, tied for the most among FBS players. He also had 75 total tackles, earning first team All-Big 12 honors. McBath finished his career with 12 picks and ranks in a fifth-place tie on the Tech all-time interceptions list. His seven interceptions in 2008 also tied fifth on the single-season list. After the 2008 season, McBath was invited to participate in the 2009 East-West Shrine Game. However during practice, he tweaked a hamstring injury he'd originally suffered during the Cotton Bowl and he was not able to play in the game.
McBath was selected in the second round (48th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Before the 2009 season, McBath signed a four-year contract with Denver.
