Martin was born in Jamaica and grew up in Toronto. He did not begin playing football until the 10th grade, but quickly got on the radar of Division I schools. Martin signed a letter of intent to play at Michigan State, but failed to qualify through the NCAA clearinghouse due to a transcript problem with a 9th-grade class. He ended up attending Western Ontario, a CIS school in Canada.

Martin played two seasons at Western Ontario, spending time at all four defensive line positions. In 2008, he recorded 38 total tackles and 3.5 sacks, while also lining up in the backfield in short-yardage situations. Martin is believed to be the first ever player from a Canadian college to declare early for the draft.
