Jerald Sherrod Martin is a defensive back for the Carolina Panthers, who selected him with the 59th overall pick in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Martin played college football at Troy, where he was a two-time All-Sun Belt selection. Martin is 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 191 pounds. His name is pronounced shur-ODD.
Martin played three seasons at free safety and wide receiver for Griffin High School in Griffin, GA. As a senior, he had three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Martin also played four seasons of basketball and was on the track and field team for two seasons.
Martin signed with Troy in February of 2003, but deferred his enrollment to January of 2004. As a true freshman, Martin started seven games at strong safety, finishing with 68 total tackles and three interceptions.
Martin played through injuries to both shoulders as a sophomore, finishing the 2005 season with 78 total tackles, two interceptions and 11 pass breakups. After the season, he underwent surgery on both shoulders, forcing him to miss the entire 2006 season.
Martin returned in 2007, but played sparingly early in the season, after suffering broken bones in his hands against Florida. Over the last eight games of the season, he recorded 52 total tackles, which led the team in that span and ranked sixth on the team for the entire season. Despite missing two games and only playing briefly in the first two of the season, Martin tied for the Sun Belt Conference lead with six forced fumbles. He earned honorable mention All-Sun Belt honors in 2007.
Healthy for the first time since 2004, Martin played all 13 games as a senior, finishing second on the team with 87 total tackles and four interceptions. He led the Trojans to the Sun Belt Conference title and a berth in the New Orleans Bowl. After the 2008 season, Martin was invited to participate in the 2009 Senior Bowl, where he had three total tackles and a pass breakup for the winning South team.
Martin was selected in the second round (59th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Before the 2009 season, Martin signed a four-year contract with Carolina.
