Overview
David Veikune is a defensive end for the Cleveland Browns, who selected him with the 52nd overall pick in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Veikune attended the University of Hawaii, where he was a two-time All-WAC selection. Veikune is 6-feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 265 pounds. His last name is prounounced vay-KOO-nay.
Prep Career
Veikune was a first-team all-state selection as a senior at Campell High School in Ewa Beach, HI. He had scholarship offers from Colorado and Utah and chose to sign with Colorado.
Colorado and Fresno City
After redshirting the 2004 season with the Buffalos, Veikune decided to transfer to be closer to home. Instead of transferring directly to Hawaii, and being forced to sit out another season, Veikune went to Fresno City College. He played one season with the Rams and was a second team All-Valley selection.
Hawaii Career
Veikune finished his college football career playing three seasons at Hawaii. He saw limited action in 2006. As a junior, Veikune made one start in 13 games, but still earned first team All-WAC honors, finishing third in the conference with 7.0 sacks. As a senior, Veikune had 73 total tackles. His 9.0 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss were both team highs and ranked in the top five in the WAC. After the 2008 season, Veikune was chosen to play in the Senior Bowl.
NFL Career
David Veikune was selected in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. On July 26, two days after the Browns opened training camp for rookies, Veikune signed a contract with Cleveland. Terms were not disclosed.
