Overview
Derek Cox is a defensive back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him with the 73rd overall pick in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. After completing his college career at William & Mary, Cox entered the 2009 NFL Draft. Cox is 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 180 pounds.
Prep Career
Cox played high school football at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville, NC. As a senior, Cox led his team to a state championship, serving as a cornerback, wide receiver and kick returner. He returned five kicks for touchdowns as a senior in 2003.
College Career
Cox was a three-year starter at William & Mary who earned All-CAA honors in both 2007 and 2008. As a senior, he led the Tribe with four interceptions and five pass breakups. Cox also served as a punt returner for William & Mary and returned two punts for scores as a senior in 2008. He also scored twice on interception returns as a senior. Cox was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but caught the attention of scouts by running a 4.39 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.
NFL Career
Cox was selected in the third round (73rd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before the 2009 season, Cox signed a four-year contract with Jacksonville.
