Overview
Shawn Nelson is a tight end for the Buffalo Bills, who selected him with the 121st overall pick in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Nelson played four seasons at Southern Miss, where he was a four-time all-Conference USA selection. Nelson is 6-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 239 pounds.
Prep Career
Nelson was a team captain at East Ascension High School in Gonzales, LA. Despite not playing in a tight-end friendly offense, Nelson drew the attention of Division I football programs. He signed with Southern Miss after also considering Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State and Louisiana-Monroe.
College Career
After redshirting the 2004 season, Nelson immediately had an impact on the Southern Miss offense. He led the Golden Eagles in receptions in both 2005 and 2006, and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2006 and 2007. As a senior in 2008, Nelson had a career-high 53 receptions for a career-high 557 yards, but only earned honorable mention all-conference honors. He finished his career with 157 receptions, second in Southern Miss history behind only Sherrod Gideon. After the 2008 season, Nelson was invited to participate in the Senior Bowl, becoming the first Southern Miss player in the game since 2004.
NFL Career
Shawn Nelson was selected in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Before the 2009 season, Nelson signed a four-year contract with Buffalo.
