Overview
DeAngelo Lamar Smith is a cornerback for the Detroit Lions. Smith was drafted by the Cowboys, who selected him with the 143rd pick in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Smith played four seasons for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Smith is 6-feet tall and weighs 190 pounds.
Prep Career
As a senior at Independence High School in Columbus, OH, Smith intercepted 11 passes, five of which he returned for touchdowns. He also caught 14 TD passes on offense and had a combined seven kick and punt return scores, earning first team all-state honors.
Freshman Year
Smith redshirted the 2004 season and played mostly on special teams in 2005.
Sophomore Year
In his first game as a starter in 2006, Smith returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown against Rutgers, earning Big East Defensive Player of the Week honors. He finished the season with 23 total tackles and two interceptions.
Junior Year
Smith's breakout year came as a junior in 2007. He had eight interceptions, tying with four other players for the most among bowl subdivision players. In addition, he had eight pass breakups, finishing second in the Big East in total passes defended with 16. Smith was a second team All-Big East selection, and capped off his season with three interceptions against Southern Miss in the Papajohns.com Bowl.
Senior Year
Smith only had two interceptions as a senior, but his 10 pass breakups tied for the Big East lead, along with teammate Mike Mickens and Pitt's Aaron Berry. Smith also returned punts for Cincinnati, which won the Big East title and earned a berth in the Orange Bowl. After the 2008 season, Smith was invited to participate in the 2009 Senior Bowl, where he served as a defensive back and punt returner in a losing effort for the North team.
NFL Career
DeAngelo Smith was selected in the fifth round (143rd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Before the 2009 season, Smith signed a four-year contract. He was waived on Sept. 5, 2009, but claimed on waivers by the Cleveland Browns a day later.

The Browns waived him after Week 1, and he was picked up by the Bears. Smith was waived again on Sept. 29, after having been inactive for two weeks with Chicago, but re-signed to the practice squad on Oct. 6, 2009. The Lions signed Smith off the Bears practice squad on Nov. 18, 2009.
