Travis Beckum is a tight end for the New York Giants, who selected him with the 100th overall pick in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Beckum played four seasons at Wisconsin, where he was a 2007 finalist for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the best tight end in the nation. Beckum is 6-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs 224 pounds.
Prep Career
At Oak Creek High School in Milwaukee, WI, Beckum was the Wisconsin Player of the Year as a senior. Playing primarily at defensive end, Beckum recorded 108 tackles (38 for loss), 16 sacks, seven interceptions and eight fumble recoveries in 2004. He was ranked the No. 1 defensive end prospect in the class of 2005 according to Scout.com, and chose to go to Wisconsin over Miami (FL), Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
Beckum played sparingly as a true freshman, recording two total tackles in 10 games. Beckum, who played some offense in high school, was switched to tight end for his sophomore season with the Badgers. He caught 61 passes for 903 yards and five touchdowns, earning second team All-America honors from Sports Illustrated and the Walter Camp Foundation. He was also a semifinalist for the Mackey Award.
In 2007, Beckum improved across the board statistically. He led all tight ends in receiving yards (982), and his 75 receptions tied a Wisconsin school record. He was a finalist for the Mackey Award, losing out to Fred Davis of USC. In addition to being a consensus first team All-Big Ten selection, Beckum was a first team All-America selection by both the Walter Camp Foundation and Rivals.com.
Beckum missed the first two games of his senior season due to a hamstring injury, then played just six games before suffering a broken left fibula against Illinois. He finished the season with 23 receptions for 264 yards. His career totals of 159 receptions and 2,149 yards rank third in school history behind Lee Evans and Brandon Williams.
NFL Career
Beckum was selected in the third round (100th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Before the 2009 season, Beckum signed a contract with New York. Terms were not disclosed.
