Jason Smith is an offensive tackle for the St. Louis Rams, who selected him with the second overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Smith, who was an All-America selection at Baylor, was the first Baylor player selected in the first round since 1996. Smith is 6-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 305 pounds.
Prep Career
At W.T. White High School in Dallas, Smith spent two seasons as an all-district offensive lineman before moving to tight end for his senior season. Smith caught seven passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in his only season at tight end, earning all-district honors at that position as well. He played in the 2004 Coca-Cola High School Football All-Star Game.
Freshman Year
Smith redshirted the 2004 season at Baylor but made eight starts as a redshirt freshman in 2005. He played in all 11 of Baylor's games that season, finishing with six catches for 70 yards. He scored his only collegiate touchdown in a double-overtime loss to Oklahoma.
Sophomore Year
After the 2005 season, then-Baylor coach Guy Morriss suggested a switch to offensive tackle for Smith. He made the move easily, starting every game for Baylor at right tackle in 2006. He played every offensive snap in 11 of 12 games and led the Bears offense in total snaps played.
Junior Year
Smith suffered a setback as a junior, playing in only seven games due to a strained right MCL. He suffered the injury in the season opener against TCU, then missed the next three games. Smith returned for Baylor's game against Texas A&M, but re-injured the knee the next week against Colorado. He missed two more games before returning to the starting lineup for good against Kansas State. Despite the limited action, he shared Baylor's best offensive lineman honor with center J.D. Walton and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection.
Senior Year
Smith earned larger accolades in 2008, becoming the only Baylor offensive player chosen as a first team All-Big 12 selection. Nationally, Smith was recognized as a third team All-America selection by the Associated Press and a first team selection by the FWAA. He played every game of the season for the Bears at left tackle.
NFL Career
Smith was selected in the first round (second overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. Smith was the first Baylor player selected in the first round since DT Daryl Gardener in 1996. Before the 2009 season, Smith signed a five-year/$62M contract, which included $33M in guaranteed money.

Smith earned the starting right tackle job during his first preseason with the Rams. He played 8 games in 2009, starting five of them. Smith suffered a conscussion in Week 11 against the Cardinals and missed the rest of his rookie season.
Smith is the son of Duane and Linda Smith. His nickname is Smooth.
