Freshman Year
After redshirting the 2004 season, Carpenter went into 2005 as the backup to junior Sam Keller. He led Arizona State to four wins in his five starts, throwing for 1,829 yards in those five games. He finished the season with 2,273 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also threw for four touchdowns in that game, earning Offensive Player of the Game honors.
Sophomore Year
Prior to the 2006 season, coach Dirk Koetter named Keller the starting quarterback. However, the choice led to controversy and two days later, Koetter reversed field, giving the starting job to Carpenter. Keller ended up transferring to Nebraska for his senior season. As a sophomore, Carpenter threw for 2,523 yards and 23 touchdowns, earning honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors.
Junior
Under new head coach Dennis Erickson, Carpenter had his first 3,000-yard season, throwing for 3,202 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2007. He became the fourth Arizona State quarterback to throw for 2,000 yards in three straight seasons, joining Jeff Van Raaphorst, Jake Plummer and Andrew Walter.
