Nintendo on Tuesday unveiled which top players will be competing on the Nintendo Switch at the Super Smash Bros. Invitational at this year's E3 in Los Angeles.
The players competing in the June 12 event include an even split of top Melee and Smash 4 talent. The Melee side consists of Alliance's Adam "Armada" Lindgren, Cloud9's Joseph "Mang0" Marquez, Dignitas' Joey "Lucky" Aldama and Panda Global's Justin "Plup" McGrath. On the Smash 4 end, Echo Fox's Leonardo "MkLeo" Perez, Yuta "Abadango" Kawamura, Beastcoast's Ramin "Mr.R" Delshad and Team SoloMid's Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios make up the field.
"They invited four top Melee personalities and four Smash Wii U personalities, so they wanted even representation," ZeRo said. "Also, every single Smash Wii U player is international and from a different place, so perhaps they wanted to represent how Smash Bros. is a global game that gets everyone together, no matter where you are from or what games you play."
ZeRo was the 2014 Nintendo Invitational champion and is the only person invited from the prior event. ZeRo has not gotten word if he or any of the other competitors will get early access to the new game before the tournament.
The Smash Bros. Invitational exhibition tournament will feature the upcoming iteration for the Switch. Nintendo has yet to demo the game for the public.
And for ZeRo, the previous champion, even in his retirement from Smash 4, he's still in it to win.
"I had one of the best times of my life in the last invitational, and I know this one coming up will be even better! I'll do my best to defend my title from 2014 and win two invitationals."
E3 runs from June 12 to 14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown L.A. The annual video game extravaganza features new game announcements and several esports exhibitions.
